Tom Kamp Private Teaching Philosophy

My job is to teach each student how to teach themselves. In the lesson I teach them tools to use while practicing, I teach the ability to develop and use their own practice tools, and I teach how to use the tools to achieve their goals, all within the framework of clear expectations. I play along in every lesson to provide motivation with an example of the desired sound goal.

The lesson is like a consultation where the student shows me what they have worked on, we discuss how to set and achieve the next goal and adjust any methods being used. The next week, we again evaluate and adjust.

My expectation is that the students will practice daily (within reason,) and participate in the above process.

In my work as a teacher, I have come to see my role as providing a warm, supportive, positive environment in which children can feel empowered to experiment and learn. Music has special powers to stimulate creativity, advance learning ability and create a sense of community. I feel a good music teacher facilitates all aspects of learning through the use of music, as well as learning about music.
